A business plan writer in Dallas costs anywhere from nothing to five figures, and the spread is not random. The price mostly tells you which of four kinds of provider you are talking to. Each one is the right choice for somebody, and the expensive mistake is not overpaying. It is hiring the wrong kind for the reader your plan has to convince.
This is a guide to choosing among them as a Dallas owner. If you only want the numbers, our national guide covers what a business plan costs in detail.
The four kinds of business plan writer in Dallas, and what each costs
Free advising: the North Texas SBDC Network and SCORE Dallas. The SBDC network, hosted by Dallas College, offers business advising and workshops on loan planning. SCORE Dallas pairs you with a volunteer mentor who has run something. Neither charges for the advice. The catch is that neither writes the plan. An advisor will react to your draft and point you to the right lender, but the writing and the spreadsheet are yours. If your request is modest and your business is simple to explain, start here.
A national plan-writing service. These sell a plan at a low fixed fee, usually built from a questionnaire you fill out online. You get a clean document fast. What you do not get is anyone who has seen the business, challenged your assumptions, or asked why revenue doubles in year two. The plan reads fine until a lender asks a question the questionnaire never did.
A local accountant or CPA. Many Dallas accountants will extend into plan work for an existing client, typically billed on time spent. This is often the strongest option on the numbers, because your accountant already has your tax returns and knows where the projections have to reconcile. It tends to be thinner on the market case: who the customers are, what the competition charges, and why demand supports the forecast.
A boutique consulting firm. A firm quotes a fixed project fee and builds the plan, the financial model and the market evidence together. This is where CMA sits, and our prices are published: $1,250 for the Essential Plan on raises under $250,000, $3,250 when you are raising $250,000 to $2 million, $7,500 for $2 million to $25 million, and from $12,500 for project finance or institutional work. The same prices apply to business plans in Dallas as everywhere else we work.
Match the provider to the reader, not the budget
A plan is written for one reader. In Dallas that reader is usually a bank or SBA lender’s underwriter, and an underwriter starts with whether the business can carry the payment. The narrative gets read after the numbers.
That changes how you should shop:
- A relationship banker who already knows you, and a small request. Free advising plus your own draft is often enough. Our free business plan template will carry it.
- An SBA-backed loan from a lender who does not know you. The projections have to reconcile to your tax returns and the use of funds has to survive a second reading. This is accountant or firm territory. Check your own coverage first with the DSCR calculator.
- A second location, an acquisition, or outside investors. Now the market case matters as much as the numbers, and the financial model has to flex when someone changes an assumption. A questionnaire-built plan will not hold.
Five questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Who is the reader, and have you written for that reader before? An SBA underwriter and an angel investor want different documents.
- Is the model built from my operating numbers? If the forecast does not start from your actual capacity, pricing and costs, it was built backwards from the loan amount. Underwriting catches that quickly.
- Is the price fixed in writing? A quote that can grow while the work is underway is not a quote.
- Who actually does the work? Ask whether the person on the sales call is the person writing the plan.
- What happens when the lender asks for changes? They usually do. A local writer can sit in a room with you and turn revisions in days. Ask what revision support is included.
When a local writer is worth paying for
Being local is not a virtue by itself. It earns its price in two situations. The first is when the writer needs to see the operation to describe it credibly: the kitchen, the yard, the second site you want to lease. The second is when the plan is going to a Dallas lender and will come back with questions, because the revisions happen across a table instead of across two weeks of email.
If neither applies, and your accountant is willing, take that route before ours. We say the same thing on our Dallas page.
The short version
Start with the free help if your request is small. Use your accountant if the numbers are the whole story. Hire a firm when the plan has to persuade someone who does not know you, and when the market case and the model both have to hold up. Whoever you choose, get the price in writing first.
If you want a straight answer on which lane fits your raise, our business plan practice starts with a 30-minute call, and the smaller options are on the small business page. Book a call and tell us what you are raising and from whom.
Questions owners ask
How much does a business plan writer in Dallas cost?
It depends on the kind of provider. Advising through the North Texas SBDC Network and mentoring through SCORE Dallas cost nothing, though you do the writing. National plan-writing services charge a low fixed fee, accountants usually bill for their time, and boutique firms quote a fixed project fee. At CMA, which is headquartered in downtown Dallas, a plan is $1,250 for a raise under $250,000, $3,250 for $250,000 to $2 million, and $7,500 for $2 million to $25 million.
Is there free business plan help in Dallas?
Yes. The North Texas SBDC Network, hosted by Dallas College, offers business advising and workshops, and SCORE Dallas pairs owners with volunteer mentors. Neither writes the plan for you, but for a straightforward plan and a modest loan request they are the right first stop before paying anyone.
Should I hire a local business plan writer or a national service?
A national service works when the plan is simple and the reader is not going to test it hard. A local writer is worth more when the plan has to hold up in front of a Dallas lender, because the writer can see the business, sit down with you in person, and revise the numbers quickly when an underwriter pushes back.
What should I ask a business plan writer before hiring one?
Ask who will read the plan and whether the writer has written for that kind of reader, whether the financial model is built from your own operating numbers, whether the price is fixed in writing, who actually does the work, and what happens when the lender asks for changes. A writer who cannot answer all five clearly is selling a document, not a funded request.
