How Much Does a Fractional COO Cost?

How Much Does a Fractional COO Cost?

A fractional COO at Coleman Management Advisors costs $6,000 to $12,000 a month, with a three-month minimum. The exact figure is fixed in writing on the intro call, before you commit to anything, and there is no hourly meter running on top of it.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide explains what moves the price within that range, how it compares with hiring, and how to tell whether you need one yet.

How much a fractional COO costs, and why it varies

Fractional COO pricing varies more than most consulting because the job varies more. Some firms bill by the hour, some sell a monthly retainer, and a few take equity. Many do not publish a number at all, which makes comparison hard.

We publish ours on our pricing page. Within the $6,000 to $12,000 range, three things set where an engagement lands:

  • How much of the operation needs leadership. Tightening one team’s handoffs is a smaller job than running operations across locations or departments.
  • How fast it has to change. A business preparing for a raise, a large new contract or a franchise launch needs more of the COO’s time in the first months.
  • How much has to be built. If there are no documented processes, no dashboard and no weekly operating rhythm, those have to be created before they can be run.

The price reflects the work, not a count of hours. We size it on the intro call and write it down.

What the monthly price includes

A CMA fractional COO engagement is embedded operating leadership, part-time. In practice that means:

  • Senior operating leadership inside your business, with real authority over how work gets done.
  • Documented SOPs and an operating cadence, so the business runs on systems instead of on whoever remembers how.
  • KPI dashboards on live data, so you see the numbers without building a spreadsheet at midnight.
  • Hands-on implementation with your team, not a slide deck of recommendations.

The engagement is designed to end. The goal is a business that runs without us, with the knowledge written down and a person on your team who owns operations.

Fractional COO cost vs. hiring a full-time COO

A full-time operations executive costs more than their salary. Add benefits, payroll taxes, recruiting and equipment, and the fully loaded figure climbs well above base pay, for a full year whether the work fills it or not. A wrong hire at that level is also slow and expensive to undo.

A fractional COO trades that for leadership sized to the work in front of you. To compare with your own numbers, use our fractional COO savings calculator. Enter the salary you would expect to pay and your own overhead assumptions, and it shows the difference. For the wider comparison, see fractional COO vs. full-time COO.

When a fractional COO is worth the money

It usually pays off when the owner has become the bottleneck: every decision routes through you, processes live in people’s heads, reporting means pulling numbers by hand, and growth is outrunning the systems. It is usually not worth it when the real problem is demand. If you do not have enough customers, operations help will not fix that.

How payment works

Fractional COO work is billed monthly at the fixed price in your written agreement, with a three-month minimum. If a full engagement is more than you need right now, an Owner’s Working Session is $650. And once the systems hold, some owners keep CMA on an ongoing advisory retainer from $750 a month: a senior partner in the operating rhythm for as long as it earns its keep.

The fastest way to get your number is a 30-minute intro call. We will look at the operation, tell you honestly whether you need a fractional COO yet, and if you do, give you a fixed monthly price in writing.

Questions owners ask

How much does a fractional COO cost?

At CMA, a fractional COO engagement runs $6,000 to $12,000 a month, with a three-month minimum. Where a business lands in that range depends on how much of the operation needs leadership and how fast it has to change. The monthly price is fixed in writing on the intro call, before any commitment.

Why is there a three-month minimum?

Operational change takes time to land. The first weeks go to learning how work actually moves, and the documented processes, dashboards and operating rhythm need time in use before they hold without the fractional COO in the room. A shorter engagement tends to leave half-built systems behind.

Is a fractional COO cheaper than hiring a full-time COO?

Usually, because you pay for the leadership the business needs rather than a full salary plus benefits, payroll taxes, recruiting costs and the risk of a wrong hire. The engagement also ends with the work documented and handed to your team. Our fractional COO savings calculator lets you compare using your own salary assumptions.

What is included in the monthly price?

Embedded operating leadership, part-time; documented SOPs and an operating cadence; KPI dashboards on live data; and hands-on implementation with your team. There is no hourly meter on top of the monthly price.

Is there a smaller way to start?

Yes. An Owner's Working Session is $650, and many owners start there or with our free fractional COO readiness check. After an engagement, some keep CMA on an ongoing advisory retainer from $750 a month.
